The Chong Yang Festival, also known as the Double Ninth Festival, is a lesser-known Chinese holiday. It falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar. In Chinese, “double nine” sounds similar to the words for “auspicious” or “longevity,” so the day has come to symbolize good fortune and long life. It is now also celebrated as Senior Citizens Day, a time to show respect and kindness to elders.
